Inside my home office, a not-so-perfect space

Pinterest has got a lot to answer for. First of all it makes us all browse their feed for hours on end, in my case looking at kitchens, living rooms and also home offices. It also creates fake expectations, we all hope to get those perfect living spaces which in reality not many people have.

One of my favourite things to browse in Pinterest are home offices. Strangely enough, as a colour lover most of my pinned looks are the scandi, monochrome style rooms with white walls and floors and very minimalist accessories. Unfortunately for me I don’t have that type of space at home, I do have a very different home office style.

We have been in this house for 6 years. The previous owners had converted the garage into a music room/studio and when we viewed it we thought it’d be ideal as a home office.  We promised ourselves it’d be an uncluttered space with plenty of space to work. Six years and 2 children later our office serves as CD and book storage, pantry, dumping ground and even handbag storage (don’t ask!).

I am not going to show you the whole room as you will be horrified, but only the little corner I use as an office. This is sadly not a Pinterest perfect blogger space, this is my real home office. Working from home 2 days a week means I need a relatively tidy and nice environment.  I also do a lot of my blogging in the evenings too, so it’s a room where I spend quite a fair amount of time.

As the room is quite long, there is enough space for 2 Ikea desks next to each other. A printer comes very handy, I have a colour Canon one, although I don’t use it too often. I also keep both my cameras, a Nikon D3000 and the Olympus Pen in the office, just in case I want to take or edit any pictures.

The only downside of this space is that it’s not very bright. It’s a long, narrow room and it only has a window, and a door on the other side that leads to the utility room, so in the winter it can be pretty dark. All these pictures on a relatively sunny day, and you can see how they are still not very bright.

The little pen pot holder was made by my mum in her ceramics class. She is quite talented and has made a lot of little bits and pieces that we have at home.

Getting used to having 2 monitors took a bit of time and I really thought it was a bit odd, but I now love it. It’s handy to be able to edit photos in one of them while I work on something in the other one.Home office

Choosing what pictures to put on the wall hasn’t been easy. I wasn’t sure what type of prints I wanted so in the meantime I framed some fashion magazine covers. I used some colourful frames and I am very pleased with the result. They  give the room a more feminine look and they are a cheap way of decorating a small space. Home Office

So, this is my working space, it’s functional, feminine and it does the job.

This is not you typical Pinterest bloggers office. It’s a real space of a working mum of two young children that has a busy life. I’d love to have an all white, tidy and perfect space but unfortunately that will have to wait a few years..

It’s been very hard to take these pictures as the lighting is not great. It has also been hard to avoid the glare when photographing picture frames. A bit of an impossible task!

Do you have a home office?

  1. I love your mum's ceramic pot! I'd love to have space for two screens, everyone who has that set up says it's brilliant, sadly I only have a teeny one-laptop sized desk. I too have a 'Home Office Inspiration' Pinterest board, for dreaming and plotting, but as you say, real life is a tad different! And it's nice for you to share your space with us all #HomeEtc
  2. The framed magazine covers are a great idea! I always struggle with lighting in my home too and my pictures come out dark so I feel your pain! The office looks lovely though, and who cares if it's not Pinterest-perfect as long as it works for you #HomeEtc
  3. Those framed magazine covers are fab, and I love Red magazine. I have abit of a habit of home office browsing too. We are hopefully moving to a 4 bed soon and the plan is to keep the boys sharing short term so I can have the box room as an office, then long term when they are older and need space to convert the garage to have a home office and space for my husband to have his work out equipment. x
  4. 'Home office' is slang for dumping ground, right?! I think the touch of your pen pot made by your mum is lovely – so personal.-L
  5. You office looks fab, I love the idea of have two monitors I could pin and blog at the same time. Love the red pics too they look great x
