Olympus Pen E-PL7 45mm lens

I’ve had my Olympus Pen E-PL7 for nearly two years now – you can read my other Olympus posts  here and here. When I first got it, the plan was to carry on using my Nikon D3000 and use the Olympus Pen for days out or whenever I didn’t want to carry the Nikon with me.  But the Olympus is so light and compact that I’ve very rarely used the Nikon since.

I initially purchased the Olympus Pen E-PL7 with the pancake lens and last year I added the 45mm lens to my kit. This is a perfect lens for portraits with a fast aperture of f1.8  producing beautiful pictures with great depth of field and that lovely bokeh effect we all love.

The 45mm lens is quite impressive.  Light, still compact enough to carry it on a small bag, it produces super-crisp fine images with vibrant colours. It will really take your photography to the next level. If you are a blogger it will make your images look really professional and make you look like a skillful photographer.

Being a fixed focal length lens means you can not zoom in or out but that is not a big deal, especially when shooting portraits as it’s nice to stand a bit away from the subject. Who wants a camera on their face anyway? Having to stand far back means you can also take those beautiful natural shots without your subject noticing.

To get the bokeh effect there needs to be a bit of distance between your subject and their background, so for example, if someone is leaning against a wall you will not make the most of the wide aperture and the background will not have a great bokeh effect.

If I have to be picky and find a downside of the Olympus Pen is that it doesn’t perform too well under low light conditions, however I have been mainly using it in daylight so it hasn’t been a great problem for me.

Black Friday is usually a good time to purchase Olympus equipment as there are usually offers around.  In fact I got all my Olympus equipment with Black Friday offers.

All the pictures on this post have been taken using the Olympus 45mm lens and none have been edited
